Why is Nature Beautiful?
The splendor of nature cannot be denied. We find the sight of towering mountains breathtaking, the glow of a red sunset fascinating, and the sound of waves breaking against the rocks to be aesthetically pleasing.
These things in nature are stunning just by being natural. When I say something is “inherently beautiful,” I mean that it is lovely without regard to whether or not anyone is around to see it.
Artifacts, or things made by humans with a specific purpose, are not included in my definition of the natural world.
If you were lucky enough to have a rural home during the current pandemic, you know the healing power of a good walk.
Of course, we could also say that nature is unsightly in some spots.
Consider the many parasites (for example, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis) and illnesses that affect people and animals. However, perhaps this anguish is required to maintain the balance essential to a flourishing ecology.
Therefore, one may argue that the natural world is only lovely when no one or nothing is in pain. Thus, the question becomes, how much do we find the natural world aesthetically pleasing?
Philosopher Mark Wynn has noted that, unlike nature, human-made objects are rarely attractive (unless when done on purpose). Because of this and our direct experience of natural beauty, we can safely assume that aesthetic appreciation of the natural world is a universal phenomenon. So, what accounts for this agnosticism?
Two primary reasons come to mind.
First, it’s not naturalistic; we appreciate nature’s aesthetic value because of the artistry that went into creating it. For instance, God’s beautiful creation serves as a reflection of his own character.
The splendor of the universe stems from the majesty of God. Another plausible explanation is that God created humans and other artistic creatures so that they can be inspired by God’s creations and grow closer to him as a result.
