Bonnie Burroughs, an iconic American author and screenwriter who was best known for her work on the television series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died Sunday of heart failure while on a family vacation in Portugal. She was 89.
Burroughs was born in Jersey City, N.J., in 1926. After graduating from George Washington University with a degree in journalism, she worked as a magazine writer before becoming a TV producer. She first came to prominence as a TV writer on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” She also wrote scripts for “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and other shows.

Less than a year later, she was accused of domestic violence by her then-boyfriend and former son’s father. Her ex-husband came to her defense, writing an op-ed in The New York Times in which he called the accusation “a malicious attack.” The charge was eventually dropped, but it cost Burroughs her job at Vice Media. She was also briefly barred from Twitter after posting inflammatory tweets about Islam. In 2018, Burroughs released her first novel in eight years, titled Promised Land. It tells the story of a small-town girl who becomes mayor of her town and clashes with the power structure in Washington D.C.

Bonnie Burroughs was born on July 20, 1951 in Athens, Georgia. Burroughs’ early childhood was spent moving around the country with her family, eventually settling in North Carolina. There she met future husband and songwriter David Rawlings and the two began writing together.
In the early 1980s, the Rawlings duo reunited with drummer John Densmore from The Doors and formed a new band called The Revivalists. The group released their first album in 1983 and enjoyed some success touring throughout the United States. That same year Bonnie gave birth to their daughter Gillian and left her husband to live with David.
The Revivalists disbanded in 1990 and Bonnie continued to write songs by herself, eventually landing a contract with Virgin Records. Her 1995 album If I Had adollar for everytime I thought of you became a hit, spawning several Top 40 singles including “Love Is Such A Strong Word” and “I Can’t Quit You Baby.” In 2001 she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song Written For Visual Media for her song “Cassandra” from the film Moulin Rouge!
Burroughs continues to tour throughout the world performing her warm, soulful style of music. In December 2015 she released her tenth album So I Can Tell You How Much I Love You which is currently streaming on Spotify.
