How to Draw a Chameleon A Step-by-Step Manual
The acrobat is one of nature’s multiple fascinating and distinctive animals. Their appearance alone is remarkable enough, but they also have a cool gimmick where they can blend in with their surroundings. Many people adore acrobats, and because they look so unique, it can be a fun challenge to learn how to draw an acrobat. You will only be able to see a chameleon sometimes. How to Draw a Chameleon let’s get Initiated!
Step 1
In this first step of our how to draw a chameleon guide, you will use a pencil to outline the chameleon. This is a step where you’ll want to follow the reference image we provided very closely. The drawing will be very light on the details for now, but we’ll add a few more as we progress to the later steps. Once you’ve outlined with your pencil, as shown in the reference image, you can use your pen to get started. Before the chameleon, You can see how to start this in our example, as the black lines will form the feathery lines of the drawing. Once you’re happy with the pencil lines on the face and body, you’re ready for the next step!
Step 2
We’ll continue to add some detail to the outline of this part of your chameleon. This term, we will focus on the feeders of the acrobat. When you go over the pencil with the pen, you’re not just tracing it but adding a few details along the way. You can also start drawing. The branch that the chameleon is clinging to in this step.
Step 3
In this third step of our guide on drawing a chameleon, we will add details to the legs and the inside curl of the tail. Doing this will be similar to how you did the chameleon’s arms. As you draw the pencil lines, you can also add some details. You can then use a curved line for the inner curl of the tail.
Step 4
We will be finishing the outline of your chameleon drawing in this step. The main part of this step will be finishing the outline of the chameleon’s back and the rest of the tail. You will be finishing the entire outline of the chameleon. You can also finish drawing the branch the chameleon is on. Once the entire outline is ready, we’ll add some final details in the next step!
Step 5
This step of our guide on drawing a chameleon will include adding the last details before coloring it. As you can see in our reference image, this will mainly involve adding some stripes on the back, some details on the belly, and smaller aspects like the pupils of the eyes. These are the details we’ve added, but feel free to add any additional details you’d like! You could draw a background to show that this chameleon is relaxing in a jungle or a cute terrarium.
Adding a background is a great way to put your spin on a drawing, so be sure to get creative with it! Once you’ve added all the final details and drawn the background and other elements you’d like, you can also erase the pencil lines from the first step. Any time you erase pencil lines you’ve drawn with a pen, you always want to wait until the ink in pen dries completely. Some pens carry longer to dry than others, so some may need better patience than others.
Step 6
When you color a chameleon drawing, you have a lot of freedom with how you do it! Color is a big part of a chameleon’s identity, as they are well known for how they can change colors to camouflage themselves. In our reference image, we used some shades of green to color it since chameleons are usually green by default. However, that’s just one way to color this chameleon drawing! You could even try some creative ideas while you color.
You could show the acrobat halfway through its color change. Maybe it could be half brown, half green to show that it’s blending in with the branch it’s sitting on! Once you know what colors to use, you can play with your favorite art tools and media. You could even use one medium for half of the chameleon and one for the other half to suggest a color transformation.
